Honoring MLK's Legacy

January 24, 2025

Dear Neighbor,

We are hitting the ground hard and fast!

On Martin Luther King Day, I joined a community of local neighbors who mobilized a "Freedom Walk" through Putnam Park -- where Washington’s army wintered during the 1778-1779 -- in the snow on Monday at noon.

We reflected on Dr. King’s fight for economic justice as well as the right to nonviolently critique our government. The energy warmed our spirits for the road ahead.

Healthcare Cabinet Report
On Wednesday, I attended Comptroller Sean Scanlon's unveiling of the 2025 Comptroller’s Healthcare Cabinet Report, which includes ideas on restructuring current efforts and legislative proposals to promote healthcare equity and access in Connecticut.

The summit was the second collective meeting of the Cabinet, which is composed of subcommittees tasked with creating bold, transformative solutions to healthcare obstacles facing key demographic groups throughout our state.

Proposals in the Cabinet report include:

• Increasing Medicaid reimbursement rates
• Strengthening fertility care coverage laws
• Providing funding to incentivize and support care coordination
• Implementing a publicly available insurance plan scorecard for mental health parity
• Establishing scholarships for students pursuing healthcare careers

I am keenly interested in implementing the recommendations, which very important for creating access through affordable healthcare for everyone, the report is here.

Committee Work
Committee work has begun, and I am really proud of all four committees -- Energy and Technology, Human Services, Labor & Public Employees, and Aging -- for raising the concepts we voted to raise and draft.

In addition, I am mobilizing support for all the bills that I introduced -- ranging from expanding health care coverage to the child tax care credit to reducing medical debt -- for this session. See that list here.

Constituent Coffee Resumes!
Please join me at Greiser's Coffee and Market, 299 Center Road in Easton this Sunday at noon, to raise comments, questions and concerns for this legislative session.

This is the first of a regular series of coffee hours I will host for the 2025 legislative session. I hope to see you there!

Severe Cold Weather Protocol in Effect
With Connecticut set to experience a period of brutally frigid conditions over the coming days, the state’s severe cold weather protocol has been extended through noon on Saturday.

During this period, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the daytime hours, and overnight temperatures are anticipated to drop into the single digits and possibly below zero.

Anyone in need of shelter or a warming center is urged to call 2-1-1 to get connected to these services, or they can visit 211ct.org to read a list of available locations.
