Thank You to the 104th District, Valley Update and Policy Highlights

November 13, 2024

I am honored and grateful to be re-elected as the State Representative for the 104th District. Your confidence in me is inspiring and I am appreciative of the opportunity to continue representing Ansonia and Derby at the Capitol. Together we have done so much, and there is much more work ahead of us, so I’m ready to get to it. I will take your hopes and challenges to Hartford and promise to be an advocate for everyone in the 104th District.

COFFEE WITH KARA
I will hold my monthly in-person Community Coffee Events on Friday from 8-9 a.m. at Valley Diner on 636 New Haven Avenue in Derby and Monday from 6-7 p.m. at Copper City Bar & Grill on 82-84 Main Street in Ansonia.

Derby and Ansonia residents are welcome to attend both events and share their thoughts, ask questions, and provide feedback on state policy issues.

Connecting with you and having real conversations about improving our community is why I love doing this work. These events also encourage open dialogue and promote community participation in the legislative process.

As always, if you cannot attend the events, call my office at 860-240-8585 or email Kara.Rochelle@cga.ct.gov to share your thoughts with me.

VETERANS DAY
Monday was Veterans Day, and every day, we honor our veterans for their service and dedication to protecting our country, our constitution, and our community. Thank you for your commitment, sacrifice, and service for our country.

I also want to thank everyone who organized the events to honor our veterans at Mead School, the Derby Green, and Ansonia Veterans Park on Monday, and all who attended to show their appreciation. We are so grateful.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB
FREE STATE-FUNDED TEEN PROGRAM
Attention Parents: Did you know the Boys & Girls Club is FREE for teens thanks to state funding?

Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley has a FREE state-funded teen program for teens in the 104th District that is now in its second year! Hearing teens talk about the program's impact is truly special in addition to seeing their smiles, which are all the validation I need to know my legislative work is making a real difference in their lives. I’m so proud to have secured these much-needed state funds, so our young people have a place of their own to positively spend their time.

During the school year, the program runs Monday-Thursday from 6-9 p.m. and includes free dinner, speakers during dinner on a variety of career paths, and then use of the clubhouse to relax, socialize, play games and sports, use computers for schoolwork, and much more!

Let’s keep the momentum going! Sign your teen up. Open to all Ansonia and Derby high school-aged teens.

TEEN SAFE DRIVING VIDEO CONTEST
Teenage students and high schools in Connecticut can win up to $26,000 in prizes by entering a submission into Connecticut’s 16th annual Teen Safe Driving Video Contest hosted by the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Travelers.

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for teens in the United States. In 2022, there were 2,514 people killed in crashes across the country involving teenage drivers between the ages of 15 and 18.

The Teen Safe Driving Video Contest is open to all public, private, and home-schooled high school students in Connecticut between the ages of 14 and 18.  Contest entrants are required to create a unique and effective video public service announcement no longer than 45 seconds, highlighting interactions between drivers and other teens while illustrating ways to practice safer driving habits and obey Connecticut’s teen driving laws.

The videos must also address at least one specific Connecticut teen driving law. Click HERE to read the full contest rules and instructions on submitting a video. The deadline for submissions is February 3, 2025. To watch winning videos from previous years, click here.
