Drivers Urged to Slow Down Over Halloween Weekend

October 31, 2024

As we approach Halloween, it's important to prioritize everyone’s safety including trick-or-treaters and drivers. October was the deadliest month for pedestrians in 2023 due in part to fewer daylight hours and the end of Daylight Savings. As the danger for pedestrians rises and in anticipation of seeing more pedestrians over Halloween weekend, I urge drivers to follow the following safety tips.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is also being proactive, reminding everyone to have a designated driver because a sober ride home should be a priority. Connecticut faces a major pedestrian safety crisis, but you can follow the following steps to ensure a safe ride:

  • Be aware of pedestrians at all times and in all locations
  • Drive cautiously in low-visibility conditions – be extra careful at night
  • Slow down near crosswalks and be ready to stop
  • Yield to pedestrians and maintain a safe distance
  • Never drive under the influence
  • Obey speed limits especially in school zones and residential areas
  • Be careful when reversing

By taking these precautions, everyone can enjoy a fun and safe Halloween.
