Expanding Newborn Literacy Initiative to Connecticut Hospitals

August 1, 2024
Branford’s Read to Grow invited me and a few of my colleagues to the Books for Babies launch at the Family Birthing Center at MidState Medical Center in Meriden. I was thrilled to champion an early literacy bill for several sessions that provided the financial resources needed for the organization’s expansion to several more Connecticut hospitals.
Read to Grow’s press announcement proudly stated, “We have guaranteed that every baby born in these partner hospitals receives the Read to Grow newborn literacy packet, including a copy of the board book “Welcome To The World!”, empowering growing families with the tools they need to kick-start their child’s literacy journey.”
The doctors and nurses we met were very excited about Read to Grow’s partnership. Rep. Dominique Johnson and I are doubling down on our efforts next legislative session to ensure that every child born in Connecticut receives a book to begin their home library.
