Let's Talk About It: Probate Court
My co-host Dennis O’Brien spoke with Judge John McGrath about the probate court system on our weekly radio show “Let’s Talk About It.” McGrath has served as the Windham-Colchester Probate judge for 14 years and succeeded O’Brien in 2010. McGrath will step down in 2025 after voters elect his replacement later this year. The probate judge oversees cases in Windham, Colchester, Lebanon, Chaplin, Hampton, and Scotland.

McGrath explained that most members of the public go to probate court at some point in their lives. This can happen when family members need to take care of a loved one who is a senior and no longer capable of living independently. A probate judge plays a vital role in appointing someone to act on that elderly person’s behalf. These cases usually involve nursing homes, and the judge will visit patients there. There are three nursing homes in Windham and two more in Colchester.

O’Brien and McGrath also talked about the new location for the Northeast Regional Children’s Probate Court. It will open right after Labor Day on Tuckie Road by Route 6 in Windham. This new location is on a bus line and will be convenient for those who do not have a vehicle.
