Let's Talk About It: Probate Judge Candidate

My co-host Dennis O’Brien spoke with a Democratic candidate for probate judge on our weekly radio show “Let’s Talk About It.” Mathew Olkin tells us he is running for the seat because he wants to make a positive difference in the community. He also believes he has the experience and empathy to serve on the probate court. The race will ultimately determine who will replace the Honorable John McGrath, who oversees cases in Windham, Colchester, Lebanon, Chaplin, Hampton, and Scotland.

Olkin talked about his diverse legal work and qualifications for the position. He has practiced law in Willimantic for 12 years and in that time took on a variety of cases including in family court, juvenile court, and more. According to Olkin, each case taught him different skills and that will serve him well if he makes it on the probate court.

Olkin and O’Brien, a former probate judge himself, explained that probate judges are responsible for important tasks such as:

  • Ensuring a deceased person’s estate is properly administered
  • Appointing a conservator to help families with seniors who are no longer independent
  • Appointing a guardian for a child in certain situations

Sales Tax-Free Week is August 18-24
Connecticut's annual Sales Tax-Free Week begins on Sunday, August 18 and runs through Saturday, August 24. It provides a chance to save money, whether it is taking the kids back-to-school shopping or treating yourself or your loved ones.

Retailers throughout the state offer additional discounts on clothing and footwear during Sales Tax-Free Week, providing consumers with even more ways to stretch their spending power.

During this tax holiday, most clothing and footwear items priced less than $100 are exempt from Connecticut's 6.35% sales tax. The exemption applies to each eligible item costing less than $100 regardless of how many of those items are sold to a customer in the same transaction. It applies to purchases made in-store, online, mail-order, and over the phone.

Shop smart and locally whenever possible to support small businesses and to save during Connecticut’s Sales Tax-Free Week!

Windham Leadership Program Graduation
It was a pleasure to be on hand as students celebrated their graduation from a free academic program that helps them learn about leadership and team building. The Windham Prevention Summer Youth Leadership Academy connects high school aged students with the Windham Police Department and local government so they can play an active role in our democracy.
I was honored to speak with these scholars and hear about their presentation on internet safety and cyber bullying. Thank you to Windham Police Chief Paul Hussey, Sergeant Josh Clark, Windham Town Council Members Dawn Niles and Rodney Alexander, as well as all the other organizers that make the Windham Prevention Summer Youth Leadership Academy so great.

We discussed the program in detail on "Let's Talk About It" a few weeks ago. CLICK HERE to listen to that episode.
