Public Comment on Gold Star Memorial Bridge Pedestrian and Cyclist Access
The public is invited to comment Monday on a state plan to improve pedestrian and cyclist access to the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.
The state Department of Transportation will host a presentation and question-and-answer session at 7 p.m. at New London City Hall, 181 State St., related to planned improvements to the Interstate 95 southbound bridge sidewalk.
The project calls for widening the existing 5-foot-wide sidewalk, along with the east and west approaches to the bridge. A spur path will be added connecting to Williams Street in New London. The Bridge Street intersection in Groton will also be reconfigured to allow for easier bridge access.

HB 5491 Signed Into Law
This was a priority bill for our Veterans community this year, "this is a great start" at giving back to our veterans with service related permanent & totally disability rating. This took a great deal of work and finally we were able to get it done. Really proud of the Veterans Committee, Finance Committee and fellow Legislators who truly helped finally bring this into fruition after many years of trying.
House Bill 5491, concerning permanent & total disability rating. Veterans' property tax exemptions, was a crucial piece of legislation for several reason here a few:
1. Financial Relief for Veterans: The bill provided significant financial relief for veterans by increasing the property tax exemption. This helps reduce the financial burden on veterans, many of whom may be on fixed incomes or facing financial challenges due to service-related disabilities.
2. Acknowledgment of Service: Passing this bill was a way to honor and acknowledge the sacrifices made by veterans. It recognized their contributions and provided tangible support in return for their service to the country.
3. Encouraging Veteran Residency: By offering property tax exemptions, the bill made Connecticut a more attractive place for veterans to live. This can help retain and attract veterans to the state, contributing to a more vibrant and diverse community.
4. Economic Stability: Reducing property taxes for veterans can contribute to their economic stability and well-being. This can have positive ripple effects on the broader community, as financially stable individuals are more likely to contribute to the local economy.
5. Support for Permanent & Totally Disabled Veterans: The bill specifically benefits disabled veterans, who may face additional financial and personal challenges. By providing property tax exemptions, the state offers essential support to those who have been particularly impacted by their service.
6. Bipartisan and Community Support: The passage of HB 5491 reflected widespread bipartisan and community support for veterans' issues, showcasing a united front in recognizing and addressing the needs of those who have served.
In summary, HB 5491 was important because it provided necessary financial relief, acknowledged veterans' service, encouraged veteran residency in Connecticut, and supported disabled veterans, contributing to their overall well-being and stability.
