HB 5491 Signed into Law

June 20, 2024

Public Act 24-46 has been signed into law, effective October 1, 2024. This new legislation provides a property tax exemption for veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability rating as determined by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. As a Navy veteran, I was proud to cosponsor this important bill, which passed unanimously in both chambers of the General Assembly.

This bill will help in the following ways:

  • Eligibility: Veterans who own a dwelling or a motor vehicle in the state and have a service-connected permanent and total disability rating.
  • Exemption Details: Eligible veterans can receive a tax exemption on their primary residence or, if applicable, one motor vehicle.
  • Application Process: Veterans must comply with Section 12-95 and submit proof of their disability rating to the town assessor to receive the exemption.
  • Retroactive Benefits: Veterans may apply for a tax abatement or refund retroactively for up to three years if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Veterans are encouraged to take advantage of this exemption. Our state is committed to supporting those who have served our nation.
