HARTFORD — State Representatives Kate Farrar (D-West Hartford, Newington) and Gary Turco (D-Newington, New Britain), and State Senator Matt Lesser (D-Cromwell, Middletown,  Newington, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield) announce the approval of $8,038,180 in state bonding funds for the renovation of John Wallace Middle School in Newington, after the passage of HB 5524 in the Connecticut House of Representatives and Senate. This grant is a 75% reimbursement rate from the state for the total cost of the project.

Funds are to demolish and rebuild the interior spaces of three wings in a new configuration of the school to optimize functionality and meet the needs of 21st-century education. One vital aspect of this project is to enhance security measures, with the installation of new security doors to improve safety within the school premises. The project will also include upgrades to the HVAC and electrical systems.

“It is a great day for Newington students and families," said Rep. Farrar. "I'm proud to secure over $8 million for the John Wallace Middle School renovation project. This is nearly $2 million more in state funding than originally planned, further reducing the costs for Newington taxpayers. All students, teachers and school staff deserve a high-quality and safe learning environment. Newington voters overwhelmingly approved this project and Senator Lesser, Representative Turco and I are thrilled to deliver on this promise.”

"This renovation was one of our top priorities for this legislative session and is an essential project for our community. I am also very proud of our work to secure $1.8 million more than what was originally expected when it passed out of the Education Committee,” said Rep. Turco. "Our students deserve a modern facility and an optimal and safe place to learn."

“I am so pleased that we have secured support for a 75% reimbursement rate for the school construction project at John Wallace Middle School, saving taxpayers over $8 million," said Sen. Lesser. "Now with final approval of these critical funds, this grant will help offset the cost of much needed repairs to improve security, technology, and classroom size."

The John Wallace Middle School renovation project was approved by Newington voters in a referendum vote in the November 2023 election. The bill now goes to the governor’s desk.
