Black History Month

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Official recognition of Black History Month started with a proclamation from President Gerald Ford 47 years ago, to honor the many accomplishments and contributions Black Americans have made to American society. It's a time to rejoice, reflect, and remember. Black history is American history.

The theme of this year's Black History Month,

"Black Resistance," explores how African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms.

"This country was established upon the profound but simple idea that all people are created equal and should be treated equally throughout their lives. It is an idea America has never fully lived up to, but it is an idea we have never fully walked away from either," said President Biden in his

2023 Black History Month Proclamation.
It's only fitting that we start our Black History Month highlights with our very own Q Williams, a fierce legislator, advocate and friend. He was a champion for social and racial equality, human rights, accessible housing for all and supporting youth programs to help prepare them for successful futures.

Q was always expanding his knowledge and growing as a public servant. Here are some of the incredible accomplishments this rising star achieved:

  • Earned a Bachelor's in Business Administration from Bryant University
  • Earned a Master’s of Public Administration from Villanova University
  • Earned an Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University
  • The first Black person to be elected to represent the 100th house district in the Connecticut General Assembly
  • House Chair of the Labor Committee
  • Co-founder of the educational nonprofit EquityC
  • An adjunct professor at University of Hartford
  • A proud member of the CT Black and Puerto Rican Caucus
  • A proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Beta Sigma Lambda Chapter, Hartford, CT

The trailblazing list can go on and on...but most importantly, Q was known for his warmth, optimism and infectious smile.
