Recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day

October 7, 2022

In Connecticut, we are on the traditional lands of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, the Mohegans, the Eastern Pequot, Schaghticoke, Golden Hill Paugussett, Nipmuc, and Niantic peoples.

Indigenous Peoples' Day honors the past, present, and futures of Native peoples throughout the US. The holiday recognizes the legacy and impact of colonialism on Native communities, and it also celebrates the cultures, contributions, and resilience of contemporary Native peoples.

TODAY IS MANUFACTURING DAY

As October 7th is manufacturing day, I would like to share some exciting developments coming our way in the offshore wind. I requested a study from Tufts University dept of Structural Engineering to compare the jobs creation and impact on equity as well as environment between what the developers want to use for the footing of offshore wind turbines (pile driving european steel pipes in the seafloor), with a technique that would use CT industry (low carbon concrete) and labor (carpenters, iron workers, electricians etc) and also broadly reduce impacts on the environment. The study will soon come out and the results we are seeing now are extremely promising and might give us the back up to bring manufacturing home and create many careers versus a few jobs which will strongly help our vulnerable communities."

Manufacturers help to drive Connecticut’s economy, with $12.71 billion in manufactured goods exports in 2020. Did you know there are an average of 158,000 manufacturing employees in CT? Our state budget acknowledges and celebrates the value of this industry, and aims to help strengthen and expand by establishing multiple new programs.

FLAG DIRECTED TO HALF-STAFF ON SUNDAY

U.S. and state flags in Connecticut have been directed to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, October 9, 2022 in recognition of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. This observance honors the sacrifices firefighters make in the line of duty. The ceremony occurs during Fire Prevention Week.

No flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag. To learn more about the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, please click here.
