Tax Preparation Resources

March 1, 2022

The deadline to file your federal and state taxes is April 18, which will be here before you know it!

You might be eligible for certain tax credits and deductions that can increase your refund, such as the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit. If you have an Adjusted Gross Income of $73,000 or less, you can file online for free with IRS Free File. For free income tax filing assistance in Connecticut, click here.

Resources to assist you in this year's tax preparation include:

  • AARP Tax-Aide Program: A partnership between the AARP Foundation and IRS that provides free tax counseling and preparation services to middle-and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to people age 60 and older. Many sites will electronically file your federal and Connecticut returns at no cost to you.
  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): This program offers free tax help for low-to moderate-income (under $58,000) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Volunteers, sponsored by various organizations, receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. If you need assistance from VITA in Manchester, please reach out to the Manchester Senior Center (860-647-3211) or Manchester Community College (call 2-1-1)
  • UConn Law School Tax Clinic: This free legal clinic provides help to low income taxpayers with tax problems. It also works with attorneys in Connecticut who volunteer to help low income taxpayers.

Also, U.S. Rep. John Larson, whose district includes Manchester, recently held a virtual town hall with Ken Corbin, the IRS Chief Taxpayer Experience Officer, who went into great detail and provided a wealth of knowledge to make tax filing season a little less stressful this year. You can watch a replay of the town hall by clicking here.
