Pride Flag Ceremony

June 6, 2024

Happy Pride Wethersfield! I had the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our LGBTQ+ friends and stand in solidarity with our state and town leaders, as our LGBTQ+ community faces rising injustices in our country.

Did you know 45% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year and 14% of LGBTQ youth attempted suicide in the past year. LGBTQ youth who live in a community that is accepting of LGBTQ people reported significantly lower rates of attempting suicide than those who do not. These youth are not inherently prone to suicide risk because of their sexual orientation or gender identity but rather placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society.

If we help one youth by opening our arms in acknowledgement and support, our Pride event was successful. If one person driving by, sees the Pride flag flying at town hall and feels welcome in Wethersfield, we have made a difference.
