I-95 Reopens, Immigrant Day, and Just Cause Legislation

May 7, 2024

Traffic is moving smoothly once again on I-95 in Norwalk after crews worked around the clock to tear down a damaged overpass. Keep scrolling to find out how much funding the feds are contributing to the cleanup.

Hundreds of immigrants made their voices heard in a march to the Capitol. Please look below to learn what vital changes they are advocating for that directly affects our community.

Time is running out to pass a bill that would expand just cause for evictions in our state. I'll explain how the proposal would help tenants remain in their homes.

I-95 Reopens in Norwalk

I-95 in Norwalk is open once again after crews demolished an overpass that was damaged in a fiery crash. It took less than 80 hours for the Connecticut Department on Transportation (CTDOT) to completely reopen the highway.

After tearing down the Fairfield Avenue Bridge, crews removed tons of concrete, steel, and debris from the roadway, swept the road, milled, paved, and restriped pavement markings. I want to thank our dedicated CTDOT workers for their invaluable service to our state.

I am beyond impressed by the response from local and state police, fire departments, contractors as well as their attention to detail from the demolition to environmental cleanup. Just take a look at the pictures below. CTDOT crews and contractors accomplished all that in about 24 hours over the weekend. Great job!

CTDOT engineers worked through the weekend to develop preliminary replacement plans of the Fairfield Avenue Bridge. They’re expected to complete those initial designs within the next two weeks.

The feds approved $3 million in emergency relief funds to Connecticut to help offset the costs with rebuilding the Fairfield Avenue Bridge over I-95.

Immigrant Day March and Rally
Advocates marched to the State Capitol on May Day calling for more legislation supporting our immigrant population. I stood with them, community leaders, nonprofits, and other allies who are calling for a humane immigration system, the expansion of Husky healthcare for all immigrants, equitable education, and just cause for all evictions.
Immigrants come to the United States for a better opportunity at success. We owe it to them to provide the best foundation for success. I pledge to support legislation that would achieve that goal.

Push to Pass Just Cause for Evictions
Advocates made their voices heard as they urged legislators to pass a bill that would expand Just Cause for evictions. The State Senate still needs to call SB 143 on the floor before the House can take further action.
Current law dictates that landlords must have a Just Cause in eviction cases for elderly population of age 62 and up. Let’s expand this to everyone, especially when our lowest income tier and retirees are falling to homelessness at an alarming rate in Fairfield County.

Hurricane Preparedness Week
It only takes one storm! Help spread the word about these crucial tips before the start of hurricane season.
