Hot Temperatures Expected - Take Precautions!

July 18, 2019

With a heat wave expected to hit the state in the next few days and more hot days ahead, it is critical to take proper safety measures during this humid and hot period and throughout the summer season.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook through Monday, July 22nd. Excessive heat and humidity are becoming increasingly likely Friday and Saturday with high temperatures in the mid to upper 90's and maximum heat index values around 105.

High heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor activity or extended exposure. Extreme heat can cause illness and death among the at-risk population who cannot stay cool, such as seniors, infants, and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions.

Some municipalities have already activated their cooling centers to help residents keep cool and 2-1-1 has been updating their database for available cooling centers statewide.

Taking basic precautions will help you stay safe, avoid heat-related illnesses and feel more comfortable:

  • Slow down and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Check on those most at-risk several times a day (infants, young children and older adults).
  • Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Take cool showers or baths.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible and avoid direct sunlight.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Find an air-conditioned shelter.
  • Have the phone number of your family doctor readily available in case of an emergency.
  • Keep an eye on our pets and take them outside for short periods of time only and NEVER leave any person or pet in a closed, parked vehicle.
