Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday! Today, we started the day with one of my very favorite events, the Riverfield Patriotic Day! (I may be a little biased as a Riverfield mom!) It is such a beautiful celebration of our country and all that the school does to invest in our children and a perfect kickoff for Memorial Day weekend!

This long weekend, consider visiting one of Connecticut's 142 beautiful state parks and forests. There are so many great options to choose from, and I encourage you to check out CTParks.com to find one for you and your family!

In this week's eblast you can read about Memorial Day in Fairfield, a UI power lines meeting, and more.

You can click the links below to navigate between sections.

Honoring Memorial Day + Parade Information
Monday is Memorial Day, a day to remember and honor all whose bravery and service cost them the ultimate sacrifice. While this long weekend presents the opportunity to spend time with our loved ones, it is also a time to pause and reflect on those who gave their lives to protect and preserve our great nation and democracy. I also make sure to take the time to remind myself to live a life that is meaningful and worthy of the sacrifices so many have made. I hope you all have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.
This year's parade will take place May 27 beginning at 10am. The line of march will run east from South Pine Creek Road along the Post Road to the library, then south along Old Post Road to Flint's Corner, and then east along Old Post Road passing the Town Hall Green and continuing beyond South Benson Road.
Following the town parade, make sure to stop by the Fairfield Museum for free admission from 10am-4pm! Bring family and friends to explore some of the museum's wonderful exhibits, including those on pioneering conservation and the Gilded Age in Fairfield.

UI Power Lines Meeting
Next Thursday, May 30 at 7:30pm at Roger Ludlowe Middle School (689 Unquowa Road, Fairfield), Empowering Fairfield will hold a United Illuminating power lines meeting featuring info on the next town hall informational session and an update from legislators. We will discuss the latest on utility legislation passed in the legislature and in need of Governor Lamont's signature, new developments on UI, the Siting Council, monopoles, easements, and what we can do together to preserve our towns. I hope you'll join us for this important update!

Expanding Health Care and Forgiving Student Loans
Connecticut is launching a new program that will expand health care to underserved communities while forgiving the student loans of health care workers.

The Connecticut Student Loan Repayment Program incentivizes eligible health care providers to practice full-time in underserved Connecticut communities for at least two years by offering up to $50,000 in student loan repayments. Part-time options are also available for $12,500 per year over two years, totaling $25,000.

The program offers a unique advantage in that it allows federal and private student loan debt to be repaid, expanding the eligible talent pool that can participate.

The following health care jobs are eligible for this new statewide initiative:

  • MDs and DOs in Family Practice, General Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/GYN
  • APRNs, including Certified Nurse Midwives, Nurse Practitioners, and Psychiatric Nurse Specialists
  • Physician Assistants
  • Registered Nurses
  • Dentists and Dental Hygienists
  • Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and Core Behavioral Health Providers, including Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Substance Use Disorder Counselors
  • Pharmacists

This great program will recruit and retain new health care workers, forgive the student loans of these heroes, and reduce health disparities across our state - a major win for all Connecticut residents.

The state began accepting applications this week. Click here to learn how to apply!

Major Public Acts Report
Every year, Connecticut's nonpartisan staff in the Office of Legislative Research put out a "Major Public Acts Report," summarizing the most significant, far-reaching acts adopted by the General Assembly in our latest session. You can find this year's report here.

This year's report spotlights bills on early childhood care and education, changes in our energy policies, benefits for our veterans, and much more.

If you have time this weekend, I highly encourage you to take a look through this document to see what the legislature accomplished this year.

If you have questions about any piece of legislation, please reach out to me or OLR at OLRequest@cga.ct.gov.

Greenfield Hill Commons + Fairfield Farmers Market
With summer comes one of my favorite events: farmers markets!

There are two great farmers markets nearby that you can visit for the rest of the summer and fall:

The Greenfield Hill Commons Market, which began its 35th season last Saturday, is open every Saturday until Oct. 26 from 10am-1pm at 75 Hillside Road Fairfield.

And the Fairfield Farmers Market, which begins its ninth season Sunday, June 9, will run every Sunday until Oct. 13 from 10am-2pm at the Sherman Green (1451 Post Road). You can read the full list of 30 vendors here.

Farmers markets are a wonderful opportunity to spend time outside, get high quality products, and support your local businesses. I hope to see you at the market!

Summer Concert Series
Fairfield's Summer Concert Series has returned! Every Thursday and Sunday through August 18 don't miss your chance to catch a wonderful band at the Sherman Green Gazebo (1451 Post Road) from 6:30-8:30pm. Due to the holiday weekend, the next concert will be performed by ACE & Friends on Thursday, May 30! I hope you'll check out this great Fairfield event!
