Remembering Detective Garten; Meet the HPD Interim Police Chief

September 6, 2024

I wanted to share some information related to our Capital City's police department - a chance to meet with the interim police chief, as well as a time to honor the memory of an HPD member who died one year ago today in the line of duty.

If you would like to meet or have questions for the Hartford Police Department’s Interim Chief of Police Kenny Howell, he will be touring the city this month on various dates and locations to meet the community.

The first "meet and greet" takes place Monday evening from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hartford Public Library, 603 Park Street. The last is scheduled for September 26 at the South End Senior Center at 830 Maple Street. Hopefully, there is an upcoming date that will work for residents of the 7th District to attend. Full location and date information can be found below in English and Spanish.

One year ago today, the Hartford Police Department and the City of Hartford suffered an unimaginable loss - the line-of-duty death of Detective Bobby Garten. Garten and his partner Officer Brian Kearney were hit by a fleeing vehicle at the intersection of Broad Street and Asylum Avenue. Garten was an eight-year member of the HPD, working foot patrol, the department's marine unit, and street crime division during his tenure. Garten followed in his father (now retired) Detective Robert Garten's footsteps when he joined HPD. You can read more about Detective Garten in this CT Insider article.

A candlelight is scheduled for tonight from 7-8 p.m. at the Public Safety Complex, 253 High Street in Hartford.
