Dear Neighbor,

Many people in our community have reached out to me to express that they are tired of hearing excessive car noise throughout the day and night. I agree with this sentiment - ultimately, it is a quality of life issue that needs to be addressed. Not only is it disruptive and distracting, constant exposure to loud sounds can lead to hearing damage.

That is why I crafted legislation that will help catch the perpetrators. This new law will allow towns and cities to utilize automated listening devices to catch cars running at over 80 decibels.

Violators will receive a written warning for a first offense, a $100 fine for a second or third offense and a $250 fine for repeat offenders, plus a processing fee of up to $15.

This is a nationwide problem, and I want Connecticut to be ahead of the curve. New York and New Mexico have rolled out similar programs.

These devices will help ensure that our community, and communities around the state are free from noisy and disruptive vehicles.

NBC Connecticut recorded a story about this issue. Click the image to watch.
