The House of Representatives convened for session on Wednesday and Thursday. We debated, tweaked, and passed several important pieces of legislation, including two that I cosponsored. I have provided details on both bills below:
HB 5157 passed in the House on Wednesday. This bill would make a critical update to the tire stewardship program. In 2023, the General Assembly passed a bill that created the program, which made it easier for residents to dispose of unwanted tires. Tire retailers were not required to participate in the program, and this quickly became an issue - because of the lack of oversight, some retailers resold or illegally dumped the tires that were collected. The improperly discarded tires have become a blight on many communities, including ours. HB 5157 gives retailers until July 1, 2027 to join the program.

We also passed HB 5333, a omnibus bill that includes various protections for marine wildlife, including measures to address the striped bass population. This bill will lead us on a path towards a stronger and cleaner planet.
Both bills must pass in the Senate before they are signed into law.
In other good news, CitySeed, Inc., a New Haven based nonprofit, is set to receive $150,000 in state funding through the Local Food Purchase Grant Program. CitySeed has worked tirelessly to ensure fresh and locally grown food is available to all New Haven residents. I am grateful for their work in our community - this funding will help the organization expand their already robust reach.
