Public Safety and Security Committee Priorities Passed

May 9, 2024
As the Vice Chair of the Public Safety and Security Committee, I was very active in working on legislation that would improve the safety of our communities. There were several bills that I followed since the very first day they were proposed early in the session.

We passed the following Public Safety bills:

  • HB 5279 - Expands the scope worker's compensation for the death or disability of a police officer or firefighter and expanding the period they are considered in the line of duty to 24 hours after attending training or engaging in their public work
  • HB 5399 - Strengths the criminal justice response to sexual assault to help victims
  • SB 339 - Requires anyone convicted of intentionally injuring or killing a police officer’s animal or a volunteer canine search and rescue team’s dog to pay restitution.
  • SB 341 - Establishes a fallen officer fund to provide health insurance coverage to survivors of a police officer killed in the line of duty.

I'm glad we were able to pass these bills to protect our communities and those brave workers who sacrifice to serve them. Our work isn't yet over, and we always have more safety concerns to address next session!
