Witness Stones Project

May 9, 2024
I had the pleasure of placing a stone marker in honor of Cambridge, a former enslaved person who lived and worked in Branford. The Witness Stones Project guided Branford High students and teachers through the research project. This grant, which made this possible, was acquired by The Branford Historical Society and funded by The Branford Community Foundation. The First Congregational Church of Branford collaborated with the team to find a suitable location for the stone and hosted a moving event, alongside other faith leaders.

I was impressed by the way students understood and presented Cambridge's history by studying local historical documents. Although some of the stories were difficult to hear, it's important to humanize the enslaved people and confront our country's past.
