DOT Open House

My colleagues and I attended a Department of Transportation Open House, where we had the opportunity to explore Connecticut's efforts to enhance road safety through state-of-the-art technology. From the "tow plows" that clear two lanes at once making snow removal more efficient to touring the highway operating center, it was clear that the state is making significant investments in infrastructure.

One of the most noteworthy initiatives is the installation of 200 wrong-way detection systems, with plans to add 30 to 40 new systems each year. The goal is to eventually cover every ramp statewide. These systems leverage thermal camera technology, which has proven to be highly effective, boasting an impressive 83% turnaround rate and preventing numerous accidents.

However, despite these advancements, Connecticut still faces about 700 wrong-way driving incidents annually. This highlights the ongoing challenges in tackling this dangerous issue, even with the enhanced safety measures in place.

I also learned about CTroads.org, an informative website that helps drivers navigate Connecticut roads and interstates! It provides FREE real-time traffic updates, live camera feeds, travel times, and construction alerts. Plus, you can explore transit options with the new Drive + Transit feature for Park & Ride lots.

One of the best features of this website is that you can personalize your regularly traveled routes and get SMS/email alerts so you’re always ahead of delays. I know I’ll be using it today as I travel to New York City.

Disability Employment Awareness Month in Connecticut

This year marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Governor Ned Lamont has officially proclaimed October 2025 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in Connecticut, recognizing the contributions and achievements of residents with disabilities in the workplace.

Connecticut is a state that values inclusion and remains committed to fostering a workforce where individuals of all abilities are welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed. Inclusive employment benefits both employers and employees which in turn enriches the workplace and strengthens the community.

The Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services plays a crucial role in helping individuals with disabilities find, maintain, and advance in meaningful employment. The department helps ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the workplace. Assistance for jobseekers with disabilities is available virtually and in-person, below are links to services:

As we celebrate this month, let’s continue working together to build a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, honoring the strength and resilience of survivors and recommitment to breaking the cycle of abuse.

By raising awareness, standing in solidarity, and supporting prevention and recovery efforts, we send a clear message: help is always available, and no one is alone.

Let’s continue working together to build a future free from violence, one rooted in safety, dignity, and respect for all.

Community Events

Join the Movement Community, a free eight-week, in-person group experience for people who are living with a life-disrupting loss on Sundays until November 16 at 10:30 A.M. in front of New England Brewing Company.

It combines movement—like walking, hiking, or biking—with intentional grief support, held in community with others who get it. Each group includes 15–20 grievers and is guided by a trained E-Motion Facilitator.
