Highlighting Changes to Towing Law

I was invited to speak at a press conference today in Hamden, highlighting HB 7162, a bipartisan Transportation Committee bill that significantly updated Connecticut’s towing statutes. The Town of Hamden played a significant role in shaping the bill, particularly the section that addresses consumer protection. Some of the most prevalent bad-actors in this area were preying on residents of Hamden’s housing communities. I was proud to stand with some of my Hamden colleagues and the incredible advocates who fought for these protections.

Some of the changes of the bill, which was signed into law on June 10, include:

  • Tow companies are now required to accept credit cards
  • Tow companies are prohibited from towing vehicles because of an expired parking permit
  • Vehicles cannot be towed from private property without notice unless it is blocking traffic, a fire hydrant, or illegally parked in an accessible space

Predatory towing practices can have a devastating financial impact, especially for those who are working paycheck to paycheck. Thank you to everyone who supported the bill all the way to passage.
