In 2025, the Connecticut General Assembly passed the "Connecticut Hero Act," legislation I co-sponsored, paving the way for the creation of the Borinqueneers specialty license plate. It serves as a meaningful tribute to the soldiers who embodied resilience and patriotism in the defense of freedom. The plate's design reflects the heritage, strength, and cultural pride of the Borinqueneers while giving Connecticut residents a meaningful way to publicly honor their legacy.
The Borinqueneers were a trailblazing military unit comprised mostly of Puerto Rican soldiers who served with distinction in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Despite facing segregation, discrimination, and language barriers, they earned a reputation for bravery, discipline, and devotion to duty. The unit was recognized in 2014 for their pioneering military service with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by U.S. Congress.
I am eternally grateful for the Borinqueneers, Puerto Rican pioneers who served our nation with extraordinary courage and resolve. At a time when they faced barriers both at home and abroad, they answered the call to serve with honor. This license plate ensures their sacrifices are not only remembered, but proudly displayed.
