State Representative Emmett Riley is pleased Norwich will receive $150,000 in state funding that will enable the expansion of high-quality preschool to 15 additional children.

The award for Norwich was included in an announcement Monday by Governor Dannel P. Malloy that over $3.5 million in state funding is being awarded to fourteen Connecticut cities and towns.

The funds for the program come under the state’s Smart Start initiative.

“The $150,000 award announced by the Governor for Norwich is certainly welcomed,” Rep. Riley said. “Expanding high-quality preschool is critically important for our children so that they can improve the skills they will need in the future.”

The governor announced a total of $1,587,055 for capital improvements will be considered at an upcoming meeting of the State Bond Commission, in addition to $2,088,350 for operational expenses from the Tobacco Settlement fund.

The Norwich award will come from $75,000 in Capital Improvement Funding and $75,000 from the Tobacco Settlement Fund.
