A standard driver’s license will no longer be adequate for domestic air travel or entering certain federal buildings after October 1, 2020. You will need a "verified" driver's license (AKA REAL ID), state-issued ID card or license or be required to show additional proof of identification, such as a passport. You can easily tell if you have a REAL ID; it has a gold star on it.
You can wait to renew as long as you don’t plan on flying without a passport, or you can head to the Department of Motor Vehicles and pay a $30 duplicate license fee. Just know that you will need to bring specific forms of ID to get REAL ID.
