standard driver’s license will no longer be adequate for domestic air travel or entering certain federal buildings after October 1, 2020.

standard driver’s license will no longer be adequate for domestic air travel or entering certain federal buildings after October 1, 2020. You will need a "verified" driver's license (AKA REAL ID), state-issued ID card or license or be required to show additional proof of identification, such as a passport. You can easily tell if you have a REAL ID; it has a gold star on it.

You can wait to renew as long as you don’t plan on flying without a passport, or you can head to the Department of Motor Vehicles and pay a $30 duplicate license fee. Just know that you will need to bring specific forms of ID to get REAL ID.
