Car Tax Reform Passed Benefit Bethel and Danbury Residents

July 3, 2024

Dear Neighbor,

I am excited to share important news about recent legislative changes that will benefit car owners in Bethel and Danbury. During the special session, we approved significant reforms to the process of car tax assessment, making vehicle tax assessments more predictable and fair to car owners—with most seeing a decrease in their vehicle assessments. The new law changes the assessment basis from JD Power values to the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), which reduces an average of 9.06% for residents of Bethel and, on average, 10.79% for residents of Danbury.

These reforms address the issues caused by the pandemic, which led to rising used car prices and significant fluctuations in car assessments. By basing assessments on the MSRP, we can lower the tax burden on car owners and create more stability for future assessments. Under this new system, most car owners will benefit from an average 8% reduction in their car assessments.
Cars that depreciate faster than the average, for instance, luxury cars, will still incur only a slight percentage increase in assessment. This differentiation will equalize the tax burden to be shared by all vehicle owners. This reform provides residents with more stable and predictable car tax bills, taking a bit of a strain off of the community. I am proud to represent each of you and to engage in the battle for desperately needed reforms that will contribute to directly bettering our communities.

As always, if you have any questions or if I can be of any assistance, please feel free to email me directly or call my office at (860) 240-8585.

Sincerely,

Raghib Allie-Brennan
State Representative
