Named 2019 Legislative Oral Health Champion by the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative

January 29, 2019

Honored “for efforts to increase access to health care for the underserved and uninsured in Connecticut,” I humbled to be named the 2019 Legislative Oral Health Champion by the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative (COHI) at their annual meeting Thursday.

Oral health is the gateway to overall physical health – and accessible, quality healthcare is an essential right for all. Protecting this access is among my top priorities and I will continue to fight for those who don’t often have their voices heard.

I was honored to be awarded alongside my colleague Rep. Demicco. “I am impressed with COHI’s oral health advocacy and their commitment to working with us in supporting our efforts to provide access to oral health education and its impact in our overall health,” Rep. Demicco said. “It is an honor to accept this recognition from this dedicated organization for my work at the State Capitol on policies that help our constituents with their oral hygiene health.”

For the 2019 Legislative Session,I will be faced with a series of bills related to health equity as a member of the Public Health Committee. I've introduced HB 5521, which if passed would expand required health insurance coverage for preexisting conditions.

The COHI awards were presented following a keynote address on health equity presented by Hartford City Councilor Claudine Fox, Governor Lamont’s Chief Operating Officer Paul Mounds Jr.
