Opioid Legislation Will Save Lives

April 26, 2016

After hours of spirited debate, the House of Representatives passes landmark legislation designed to combat opioid overdoses. HB 5053 will give emergency responders the tools they need to save someone who's suffering from an overdose of opioid medication. The legislation improves access to Narcan, which has proven to be successful in treating opioid overdose. It also caps first-time painkiller prescriptions at a 7-day supply, strengthens the prescription monitoring program, and releases health care professionals and good Samaritans from liability when they administer Narcan or similar opioid antagonist.

“Opioid addiction is an epidemic impacting every single community in our state." says Rep. Fox. "This important piece of legislation provides our communities with effective tools in addressing this problem.”
