A Thank-You To Those Who Contacted Me

September 19, 2017

I want to thank all my constituents who were watching and communicating with me into the early hours of the morning during last week’s budget session. After going through the GOP budget, I found too many things I could not support, including deep cuts to UConn and changes to the ECS formula, all of which are not in the best interest of the communities I represent.

While the Democratic budget is not without flaws, I still believe our proposal would have best served my constituents, and there were too many unanswered questions to vote in support of the Republican proposal without more details and time.

The most misleading part of this budget is that it is labeled a “tax free” budget, when it in fact includes tax increases that raise taxes by $840 million. The GOP budget also makes several harmful changes to the tax code such as drastically cutting the earned income tax credit, which helps working families, and eliminating the Angel Investor Tax Credit, thereby stifling small business and entrepreneurship.

After working on our proposed budget the last several months and reviewing the Republican proposed budget, I believe a compromise budget can serve the people of Connecticut best and that can only be achieved if members on both sides of the aisle put aside their differences and commit to the well-being of the people in this state. This will not be an easy process and concessions will have to be made by all.

In my 12 years in the legislature, this is one of the most difficult budget cycles I’ve seen. We did not end up in this fiscal crisis overnight and there is no one-step solution for the state. We all need to figure this out together.

I will continue to be in touch as we move forward. In addition to these digital newsletters, you can reach me on Facebook at State Representative Cathy Abercrombie or via email at Catherine.Abercrombie@cga.ct.gov. I look forward to continuing the conversation.
