2019 Legislative Accomplishments
June 28, 2019As we wrapped up the last six months of work, one of the most talked about issues was the state budget, but equally important are many measures we passed that may be of interest.
2019 Legislative Items
June 27, 2019The General Assembly’s regular session ended June 5th with a balanced budget and other significant legislation. I’d like to highlight some of the issues we addressed in the new state budget and other impactful legislation.
House Floor Comments On The Budget
June 4, 2019Programs that provide services to kids and youths to give them options and keep them off the streets and out of trouble are indispensable for Bridgeport and other cities. I am living proof of the importance of these programs. During the budget debate there were conversations minimizing the importance of these programs and calling it “wasted money.” Here are my comments in response to that sentiment.
Minority Teacher Recruitment Legislation
June 4, 2019I am pleased to report the House passed legislation that will facilitate minority teacher recruitment and retention across the state.
Act Streamlining The Liquor Control Act
June 3, 2019I am very proud of legislation that passed with overwhelming support in both the House and Senate regarding Connecticut’s rapidly growing craft beer, wine and cider industries. In just a few short years these industries have grown from a few hundred jobs to several thousand and generate millions for the state economy. Bridgeport is home to excellent craft breweries such as Brewport and Aspetuck Brew Labs in Bridgeport so this legislation will help them continue to grow.
Minimum Wage Increase Signed into Law
May 29, 2019Hard-working families in Connecticut got a boost today with Gov. Lamont signing legislation to increase the state’s minimum wage. I believe anyone working a full-time job should earn enough to support themselves and their family. This legislation is a step in the right direction.
House OKs Requiring High School Courses On Black, Puerto Rican, Latino Histories
May 23, 2019The House of Representatives approved legislation for including African-American, Puerto Rican and Latino studies in the public high school curriculum.
